In Paris, in the vast open-plan offices Systra, the architects of the world leader in public transport infrastructure (3800 employees worldwide) could not get over having to perform for real, scaled, viaducts for Skytrain. Outdated practices, such as digital addicts.
Yet in mid-2012, like their colleagues in the technical department, they adopted a new method, the "Makestorming", developed by the agency innovation consultancy Nod-A.
"This is to focus on" doing "[make], to approximate the white-collar blue-collar, thinkers makers, says Marie-Noéline Viguié, co-founder of the agency. We seek to introduce reactive modes of start-ups in large groups or small businesses that have ossified over time, entangled in pyramid and compartmentalized organizations, away from the physical world. "
The key word is the "prototype". The whole process of innovation is indeed a collaborative and interdisciplinary work around the manufacture of objects, immediately giving shape to the ingenious ideas that arise in ad hoc meetings, which has nothing to do with brainstorming . And any ideas, whether in the world of industry or services can be realized. Cardif, for example, a subsidiary of BNP Paribas, prototyped through a smartphone faux wood fiber and mobile vignettes simulating icons apps, its latest home insurance offered on the Web product. In addition, figurines or photo stories are helping to achieve the scenarios.
Each time, they are employees and contractors from all backgrounds, sometimes with users who measured, cut, bent, broken, molded, adjusted, glued, assembled, arranged ... At Systra, used to design achievements hard, the challenge was to break the practice of the profession.
"People are accustomed to act successively on a project according to their profession exposes Jean-Daniel Kuhn, program director of innovation. First, civil engineering and engineering path and systems engineering (energy, signaling ...), which requires going back and forth to understand. In addition, each behind his computer screen may lose the big picture. "
"Just like in a kitchen design, with friends"
The advantage workshops Makestorming - and workshops - is that they bring together all the stakeholders around the table and the equipment needed to build a model. Trying to anticipate the bidding to be in the starting blocks at time "T" Systra has therefore tried this new modus operandi, first mid-2012 on the proposed subway Greater Paris , and in April 2013, on the proposed future air metros Paris, Shanghai, Riyadh, Bombay, a program named Highline. And each time, three intensive days have been devoted in a standard place and co-hosted by employees of the agency and Systra.
First phase of inspiration, the morning of the first day. Highline, four teams (one city, 25 people in all), mixing engineers of all specialties, architects, planners, sales people and listened to experts from outside, including a provider of innovative materials, a keen sociologist 2.0 city and responsible design RATP.
"At this stage, the objective is to document and identify the best work on the subject so as not to reinvent the wheel," says Stephanie Bacquere, the other co-founder of Nod-A.
Immersion in the real
In the afternoon, the teams each floored their side, sharing their reflections, sketching drawings of viaducts integrated into the urban landscape while considering technical constraints (sand, wind, noise, traffic, aesthetics, etc.) . Then they are mixed and rivaled each other directly, but also via role play (the user, the waterfront, the chosen, the operator, etc.), aided by the "fixers" of home specialists seasoned, hierarchical or not.
The second and third days were devoted to prototyping, again, logic and iterations between teams crossed eyes, under the critical eye of "fixers," which helped to improve and correct models whose appearance is explained gradually. The result was, in the last hours, conducting a video of five minutes and a website dedicated city-team, just before presenting the results to an internal panel of leaders ready to endorse Systra suit the customer.
"We never pushed the competition between employees, said Jean-Daniel Kuhn is the spirit of" coopetition "prevailed. These workshops have strengthened their commitment to this project. A bit like a kitchen with friends, when one peels carrots, another potatoes, etc. It discusses seasoning, cooking, but then ... no one criticizes the dish. "
"It's also a great way to give new meaning and fun at work," says Monique Chézalviel his side, head of HR consultancy Egidia "Building together, find the taste of the book well, seeing things forward, makes you feel useful, while the virtual invading businesses creates distance to the object. "
Anyway, thanks to Makestorming, Systra has already won a contract on the Grand Paris, another in Casablanca and responded to a call for tenders in Dubai by taking two viaducts finalized the Highline project.
